This will not be an ordinary article about the markets or current financial times, it will be different. You see, I met with a client a few days ago, who commented on what a great job it is to be a financial advisor. I wasn’t quite sure where he was going with this, but quickly realized it was sarcasm. He went on to say, when the market goes up “you guys” want to take all the credit, and when it goes down, none of the blame.
He’s a fairly new client who still hasn’t come to know CJM for who we are and the values we stand for; however, it did get me thinking: Do other clients feel this way but just don’t say it?
Ergo, this blog post …
As financial advisors, we have absolutely no control over the direction of the markets. We take no credit for when they rise, and no blame for when they fall. However, we do have control over certain things. We are responsible for how well we diversify our clients’ portfolios, and how well we listen and understand their dreams, fears, and goals. We are responsible for putting them on a path that will help them achieve those goals and dreams, all the while protecting them from veering off the path and possibly jeopardizing their future.
This in itself is a major responsibility for all of us at CJM, and one we will never take lightly.
I came into this profession, partly because my father worked with an advisor (well – back then they simply called them “stock brokers”) who took advantage of his trust and created near financial ruin for my mom and dad. Unfortunately, they never really recovered from this misguidance. Our clients will never have to worry about trust, or not putting the client first with CJM, because our clients mean the world to me. I am constantly thinking of ways to add more value by staying up-to-date on all the changes that can impact our client’s future. I strive to learn strategies to enhance their wealth, beyond investing in markets. We will always be there for our clients, especially when they need us the most. While clients may not always agree with our recommendations, we only present to a client what we truly feel is in their best interest.
Growing up I wanted to be a professional baseball player. The feeling of hitting a game winning home run in the bottom of the ninth in front of thousands – what a rush that must be. It’s not just about winning the game, but about not let the fans down and giving them so much joy and happiness at the same time. Well, needless to say, I’ll never get to experience hitting a game winning home run. But I certainly do experience a similar feeling when I help a client achieve his or her goals. Knowing I didn’t let them down while in some way providing additional happiness and joy, brings the fulfillment and satisfaction of a job well done. It’s a different kind of home run.
